Must-sees in Budapest
Hungarian Parliament Building
The seat of the National Assembly rises along the Pest bank at Kossuth Lajos tér, and its neo-Gothic silhouette covers 18,000 square meters and 691 rooms. Interior access runs as an audio-guided route of 45 to 60 minutes through the Grand Stairway, the Dome Hall, and the former upper house chamber.
Under the star-shaped vault of the Dome Hall, which rises 27 meters over sixteen pillars carrying statues of Hungarian rulers, the Holy Crown of Hungary stands under permanent guard. Entry requires a valid passport or identity card, and photography stops at the crown.
Budapest Xmas markets
Budapest hosts several seasonal fairs across central public squares each winter, featuring artisan crafts, regional food stalls, and traditional entertainment. Visitors exploring the Budapest Xmas markets can tour iconic locations, including Szent István Square, Vörösmarty Square, and Fő tér in Óbuda.
Stalls offer handmade ceramics, leather accessories, chimney cake, and hot spiced wine. Major venues provide outdoor ice skating rinks, daily light shows, and live folk music concerts throughout the Advent season.
General information for visitors
Practical details that shape a first visit to Budapest:
- City layout: The Danube separates hilly Buda, where Castle Hill and the lookout terraces sit, from flat Pest, which holds the Parliament, the basilica, and the main shopping streets. Road and rail bridges connect the two banks along the whole central stretch.
- Public transport: The BKK network combines four metro lines, M1 to M4, with trams, buses, and trolleybuses under one ticketing system. Tram 2 runs along the Pest embankment and passes the Parliament.
- Metro line M1: The Millennium Underground opened in 1896 and still runs beneath Andrássy Avenue, stopping at Széchenyi fürdő for the thermal bath and at Hősök tere for Heroes' Square.
- Best months: May, June, September, and October bring mild temperatures and thinner crowds than the July and August peak.
- Identity documents: The Hungarian Parliament Building admits visitors only with a valid passport or identity card, and every bag passes a security check at the entrance.
- Church dress code: St. Stephen's Basilica requires shoulders and knees covered, so sleeveless tops, shorts, and short skirts are turned away at the door.
- Photography rules: Flash and tripods stay outside the basilica, and photography is prohibited around the Holy Crown in the Parliament dome hall.
- Thermal bath etiquette: A swimsuit is mandatory in every pool, a shower comes before entering the water, and slippers help on wet stone. Towels can be rented at the complex.
- Age limits: The Széchenyi Thermal Bath does not admit visitors under 14, and staff may ask for an original identity document to confirm a child's age.
- Accessibility: The Parliament runs elevators that bypass the 132 steps of its main staircase, the century-old bath is not fully barrier-free, and sightseeing boats accept folding wheelchairs but not electric models.
- River departures: Danube sightseeing boats leave from Vigadó tér on the Pest side and Batthyány tér in Buda, and boarding closes shortly before the scheduled departure.
- Language: Hungarian is the national language, while English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and ticket offices across the central districts.
